PORT LOUIS MARKET

ABOUT

Port Louis market was built in 1828 and later had major refurbishment work in 2004 but keeping all its original features and authenticity. This Central Market is now considered a true historical gem on the island.

Once inside, you are struck by how colourful and busy this place is, with people from all walks of life, foreign visitors, and Mauritians of all kinds, crowding in front of the various stalls.

At the Port-Louis market, known as the bazaar to the locals, you can find everything: fruit and vegetables of all kinds, colourful spices that perfume the atmosphere, butcher’s shops, fish shops that offer fresh products, souvenir shops offering a wide range of craft products such as clothing of all kinds, basketry, jewelry, boat models and sculptures.

Of course, we cannot forget the most popular stalls which attract people all day long, those of Mauritian street food stalls.

HOTEL

LUX LE MORNE

The Lux at Le Morne is relatively local to where I live and we try to book out weekends away on the island as often as we can within our budget and time constraints. The intention has always been to experience as much of the island as possible and take mini holidays/breaks for ourselves. This became even more important during COVID, where our thinking was "we live in paradise, so why not take a break in paradise!".

The Lux is located on one of the most beautiful spots/beaches on the island and surrounded by so many things to do and places to go. The beach is our favourite on the island ( please visit our 'Top 10 Beaches' page to see more options and I'll be down there at least once a month.

The Lux has been recently fully refurbished and I look forward to visiting it again where I'll update the review by for now all I can tell you is that I have always enjoyed the Lux Hotel Le Morne, whether it be for a day visit or overnight stay, I personally don't think you will be disappointed.

PLACES TO EAT

THE COURTYARD

Built in 2006, The Courtyard Mauritius is located down a narrow street in the heart of the business district of Port Louis. From the outside the building is unassuming, it is only when you cross its entrance and step into the courtyard do its beauty and elegance become visible.

Its quaint patio-style table and chairs are skillfully positioned throughout the courtyard amongst potted plants and fruit small trees to provide privacy for the diners. An ornamental waterfall provides a great backdrop of sound which seems to be amplified by the open courtyards’ acoustics.

The only negative I can report about eating here is that The Courtyard Mauritius is only open at lunch, from Monday to Friday, and between 11 am and 3 pm. If you can make lunch, I think you will find it worth it. The extensive menu has been expertly crafted by the Chef de Cuisine and Owner, Fabio de Poli. The cuisine itself is a marriage of refined local influences along with international flavours.
