TRY A ROTI

ABOUT

Roti is the staple diet here in Mauritius can be found almost anywhere in Mauritius, on the streets, at the market, anywhere!

Roti Chaud is a traditional flatbread originating from Mauritius. The snack is essentially a roti flatbread that’s filled with rougaille (tomato-based sauce) and butter bean curry known as gros pois. The flatbread is filled, rolled into a wrap, then served with an array of pickles and chutneys.

The rotis are usually made with a combination of flour, water, oil, and salt are combined to make a soft dough that is flattened and cooked on both sides. Simple ingredients and so easy to make.

Rotis can be eaten any time of the day, for breakfast lunch, or dinner with various fillings from vegetarian to meat, from spicy to non-spicy. Trying a Roti is a must as it is the national dish.

Most street vendors will have both Roti and Dholl Puri on sale and as it’s a cheap convenient snack so why not try both!

RUM SHED

I came across the Rum Shed on my first visit to the Shanti Maurice Hotel & Spa. As we entered the grounds of the hotel, just to the left-hand side I saw a sign “Rum Shed” which immediately pricked my interest.

The Rum Shed is part of the Shanti Hotel and is only open on a Saturday evening, so we booked at reception for dinner. As we walked down the gravel path we were greeted by the Shanti staff and a fully ablaze firepit in the middle of the Restaurants courtyard.

Inside the “Shed” is a bar boasting over 200 Rums from around the world, a delight for the Rum connoisseur or for those that like Rum cocktails. The floor is of sand and the walls are multi-coloured planks of timber littered with objects and pictures with light-shades of full-sized steel drums hanging from the ceiling.
The bar area is warm and friendly and expertly staffed. I recommend the Bar special smoking rum cocktail. Nibbles or meal appetisers can be served at the bar, you only have to as

I have mentioned the Shanti 3 times on this website, here, Mauritius Top 10 Hotels and Mauritius Top 10 Bars and for many reasons but I must applaud the quality of its manager and the attentive staff. Personally, I don’t think you will be disappointed.
