Getting to La Gaulette

The village is approximately 50 kilometers from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. Renting a car is the most convenient way to get there, offering the flexibility to explore nearby attractions. Alternatively, local buses and taxis are available, providing a budget-friendly option for travelers.

Getting Around Southwest Mauritius

Car

The most convenient and efficient way to explore Southwest Mauritius, or the island as a whole, is by car. Renting a car is straightforward and offers the freedom to travel at your own pace. For a detailed guide on how to rent a car in Mauritius as a foreigner, check out my dedicated blog post. Renting a car is not only easy but also a worthwhile investment for your trip.

Walking

Although a car is the best way to explore the Southwest region, you can navigate within the villages of La Gauletteand Le Morne on foot quite comfortably. These villages are small, and essential amenities like grocery stores, restaurants, and ATMs are all within walking distance, making it easy to get around locally. However, walking between La Gaulette and Le Morne isn’t practical due to the lack of sidewalks and the considerable distance—it would take over an hour on foot.

Private Driver/Taxi Services

If renting a car isn’t an option, hiring a private driver or using taxis is a great alternative. Here’s what you need to know:

Private Driver for the Day

You can hire a driver to take you anywhere on the island for a day or even multiple days. This option not only makes transportation stress-free but also provides a built-in local guide. Drivers often share unique insights, recommendations, and cultural tidbits that can enhance your trip. You can pre-book this service online or arrange it through your accommodation. Some taxi drivers also offer this service if you inquire.

Taxi Services

In La Gaulette, there’s a small taxi stand near the main road (B9), where you can try flagging down a ride. Occasionally, taxis will drive through the area and wave to see if you need a ride. Alternatively, your accommodation host can help arrange a taxi if needed. While taxis are a convenient option, availability may be more limited in the La Gaulette/Le Morne area due to the smaller size of the region.

Bus

Mauritius boasts an efficient and budget-friendly bus network, which is popular among locals. However, there are a few things to keep in mind if you plan to use this option:

  • No Air-Conditioning: Most buses rely on open windows for ventilation rather than air conditioning.

  • Peak Hours: Buses can get crowded during early mornings and evenings when locals commute to and from work. If possible, avoid traveling during these times.

  • Longer Travel Time: Buses take more time to reach destinations compared to a car.

  • Cash Payment: Be prepared to pay your fare in cash.

  • Bus Stops: Stops vary in appearance—some are marked with small signs, while others have seating and awnings.

  • Weather Preparedness: Always carry an umbrella in case you need to wait at a stop without shelter, whether it’s raining or sunny.

While buses are the cheapest option, they might not offer the same convenience as a car or private driver, especially for exploring the less-connected areas of Southwest Mauritius.
