Mauritius Faces Rising Heat and Water Woes – Residents Call for Sustainable Action

September has arrived in Mauritius with a heatwave, and this one feels different.

Across the island, residents are reporting hotter days, warmer nights, and growing anxiety over erratic rainfall patterns. Inland areas like Moka and Ebene have seen back-to-back dry weeks, while western coastal towns — often cooler due to sea breezes — are experiencing spikes in both temperature and humidity.

What was once occasional discomfort is fast becoming a pattern. And with that pattern comes a growing call: “We need sustainable change — and we need it now.”

The Water Strain is Real

While tourists may still be enjoying poolside cocktails and dips in the lagoon, locals know the strain is showing. Reduced rainfall over winter has led to low reservoir levels, increased pressure on boreholes, and scheduled water cuts in some areas. In parts of Plaine Wilhems, residents are seeing taps run dry for days at a time — particularly those who rely on CWA supply rather than private storage.

Mauritius, a nation surrounded by water, is now facing some of its worst internal supply challenges in recent years. The problem? It’s not the sea — it’s fresh, usable water, and how we store, filter, and distribute it.

Energy Bills Climb, So Does Solar Interest

At the same time, electricity bills have surged, driven by increased use of air conditioning and a higher reliance on desalination in certain resort zones. This has sparked a wave of interest in home solar systems, especially in newer developments in Tamarin, Grand Baie, and La Gaulette.

More households are now installing solar panels, investing in battery backup systems, and even exploring solar water heaters — not just for environmental reasons, but for cost-saving and energy independence.

Mauritius' Central Electricity Board (CEB) recently reported a 17% increase in domestic solar enquiries compared to Q3 last year.

Sustainable Homes on the Rise

Property developers are also taking note. Sustainable building is becoming more than a trend — it’s a selling point. Homes with features like rainwater collection tanks, passive cooling design, rooftop gardens, and greywater recycling are commanding higher value and lower long-term costs.

One developer in the North noted:

“We’re getting more demand from eco-conscious buyers. They're asking about insulation, solar, and even where our concrete is sourced.”

Community-Led Solutions & Local Champions

It’s not just homeowners who are adapting — communities are stepping up too. From permaculture projects in the South to rooftop gardens in urban Port Louis, residents are finding small but impactful ways to reduce their water footprint and promote local resilience.

NGOs like EcoMaurice and Island Sustainability Alliance are helping schools and neighbourhoods build awareness and take action. Social media groups are buzzing with rain barrel hacks, drought-tolerant landscaping tips, and solar vendor reviews.

The Bigger Picture

Climate scientists have warned that small island states like Mauritius are on the frontlines of global warming. The last two years have confirmed it — and 2025 is simply accelerating what many had hoped was still decades away.

But if there’s one thing Mauritians are known for, it’s resilience.

The call to action is clear: Adapt. Invest. Unite. Whether it’s household changes, business upgrades, or national infrastructure reform — the time to act is now.

Mauritius may not be able to control the climate, but it can choose how it responds to it.
