MAURITIUS SOUTH AFRICA by Karen My Blog < Back Mauritius South Africa Sunday, August 28, 2022 Author: Karen Thornalley my blog mauritius life now Since the Covid-19 global pandemic, the cost of a flight to Mauritius from South Africa has increased significantly along with pretty much all air travel prices. There are over 50 flights a week coming in from; Cape Town to Mauritius, Durban to Mauritius, and Johannesburg to Mauritius with 1000's taking the trip to Mauritius from South Africa. South Africa to Mauritius flights are covered by 3 main airline operators; Air Mauritius, South African Airlines (SAA), and Emirates. image: south africa to mauritius Little Durban Since I arrived in Mauritius and settled on the West Coast of the Island I have discovered that my chosen region to live in is also known as "little Durban"! The Black River area is primarily populated by local Creoles but is a firm favourite location for South Africans to live. I'm from the UK and there aren't many of us on the island. That said, South Africans are plentiful here, and at most of the social events and venues in the West you will hear an abundance of Afrikaan accents. flight to mauritius from south africa Image: flight to mauritius from south africa Taste of Home Tamarin and Black River hug the West Coastline but have a beautiful backdrop of mountains that follow the same contours. Speaking to some of my South African they say this part of Mauritius with its mountains reminds them of South Africa. Perhaps that explains why the smell of Brai's can be experienced so regularly! The island even has several branches of the famous meat shop Biltong with imported Beef from SA to cater to those wanting a feel and taste of home. south african airways mauritius Image: flight from mauritius to south africa Hear it first hand! Of all the places and activities listed on this website, I have visited the Rhumerie de Chamarel more than any other and am fast approaching 30 visits. Having lived on the island now for a number of years I have become a rum fan and a fan of the rum produced by the Chamarel Rhumerie, even to the extent I am the proud owner of a bottle of their 10-year-old rum, number 66 of 500. Here's a tip for you, if you are going to visit, have lunch (see my review in the 'Top 10 places to eat in Mauritius'), and if you book lunch the tour is free! welcome to paradise Brought to you by Karen Thornalley & propertyfinder.mu 5 RELAXED ABOUT As the title very simply indicates Mauritius's lifestyle is a very relaxed one. This would probably be everybody's thought when looking into Mauritius Life for perhaps the first time. Thinking that everyone's at the beach all day! Well, that's not really what I mean! Work does indeed happen in Mauritius and people do have to make a living to survive like everywhere else in the world. However, in my experience, Mauritius does focus on the quality of life itself and therefore the whole island seems to have a relaxed outlook on life in general. Some may find this a little frustrating at times, but for me, I have grown to embrace it and bring this ethos into my life as much as possible whilst at the same time being focussed on my career. It is celebrated in small villages during the day to meet people, it is about fun and laughter, forgiveness and relationships. Try again later CHINESE NEW YEAR Although only 3% of the Mauritius population have a Chinese background, they have a big impact of the culture and many celebrate their festivals. Chinese New Year for example is celebrated by all different people over the island. It marks the beginning of a new year on the Chinese calendar. The island becomes decorated with classic red Chinese lanterns, dragons, fans and umbrellas. In Port Lois there are big celebration for the new year as seen in the video. There are parade and displays with Chinese dragons and dancers, lots of Chinese food is eat and there are normally fireworks. VIDEO CHINESE NEW YEAR THAIPOOSAM CAVADEE This is another widely celebrated Hindu festival in Mauritius. It is celebrated in the Hindu calendar month of Thai on the full moon, which is usually January/February. Celebrating the Lord Murugam a popular Hindu god. The celebration actually lasts 10 days! For 10 days the Hindus pilgrimage, fast, offer prayers and do not indulge in pleasures, for example they only eat vegetarian food. They begin by cleansing in the river, followed by sacred piercings with needles in the tongue, cheek, arms, legs and back. Then they pilgrimage to their temple carrying wooden decorated sculpture called a Cavadee, this symbolised hope. At the end there are big celebrations and parades around the villages and at Hindu temples. If you are out and about in the streets on this day be prepared for some interesting sights. I personally don't do well with needles so try to avoid these celebrations! VIDEO THAIPOSAM CAVADEE DIWALI On the 15th day of the Kartika month on the Hindu calendar, Hindi celebrate Diwali. A celebration of the victory of light over darkness. This usually falls around October to January. This if one of my favourite celebration in Mauritius. It lasts for 5 days and you can tell when it is being celebrated as Hindus all over the island decorate their houses with fairy light and light small candle inside their homes to symbolise light and good. This festival falls between October and November which is perfect timing as many people seem to leave their lights up during the Christmas period too. Friends and family make lots and lots of small Indian sweets called Mithai which are delivered to each other across the island as a greeting and celebration. I also know it's Diwali when friends come round bearing sweet gifts, this might also be why I like Diwali! VIDEO DIWALI NEW YEARS EVE This is a celebration I am very familiar with as it is very internationally celebrated the same way. It is celebrated on the 1st of January every year which is the first day of the new year in the modern day calendar. In Mauritius people celebrate with friends and family by having a drink and eating together. Then setting off firework at 12:00AM on the 1st. This is usually followed by music and dancing. The most amazing thing about celebrating this festival in Mauritus is watching the fireworks as everyone does them. One year we celebrated with friends on a catamaran and the view of each party setting of their own fireworks was phenomenal! VIDEO NEW YEARS EVE Mauritius Rental Properties NORTH Read More SOUTH Read More EAST Read More WEST Read More CENTRAL Read More VISIT ALL RENTAL LISTINGS TOP 10's Golf Courses Attractions Activities Things to do Hotels Bars Restaurants Beaches Waterfalls Hikes LIFE Residency Renting Property Buying Property Cost of Living South Africans in Mauritius Schools Insurance Lifestyle People Getting Around Investment Property Projects Expats Every 5 Star Hotel Relocation EVERYDAY Sport Food Nightlife Weddings Fruit Festivals Vegetables Night Sky Rum Fishing Brewing Jobs Currency Company Formation Shop THE ISLAND Sealife Wildlife Religion Flora & Fauna Weather Climate Cyclones Industry Sunsets Dodo COVID-19 GANESH CHATURTHI Ganesh Chaturthi is another Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesh, the god of wisdom and prosperity. It falls in the month of Bhadrapada on the Hindu calendar which is August - September. It is a joyful celebration to show devotion which lasts 10 days and usually involves prayers, offerings of fruit and sweets to the Lord Ganesh and displays of devotion. By showing devotion it is believed you are free of sins and on the path to prosperity and wisdom. In Mauritius I have watched a celebration held on the beach where everyone dressed in traditional clothes, they play drums, sing religious songs and dance. The ceremony closes by several men carrying a statue of the Lord Ganesh and playing it on the ocean floor several meters from the shore. VIDEO GANESH CHATURTHI MAHA SHIVATRI by guest writer Lovena Sukeea Maha Shivatri is one of the most auspicious festivals celebrated in Mauritius. Maha Shivatri means 'Shiva's great night'. Shivarati is celebrated on the day when Lord Shiva saved the world by drinking poison that emerged from the ocean during Samudra Manthan. Before the festival begins devotees that are carrying the "kanwars" will be expected to fast for one month or more whereas, non-carrying devotees have only 10 days to fast. The requirement is to refrain from eating meat and consuming alcohol. Six days before the event, some devotees will start their pilgrimage with their kanwars on their shoulders to proceed to the lake of Ganga Talao. Once they reach Ganga Talao, they pray at the banks of the lake and collect the sacred water to bring back their homes. Which will be poured on the 'Shivalingam' (sacred stone representing the god Shiva) at the mandir on the "Great Night of Shiva', which is also known as the 'char pahar ki puja'. Thereafter, four prayer session take place between sunset and sunrise. Mauritius enjoys a mild tropical maritime climate of hot summers and warm winters. Here I will tell you first hand what my experience of the climate has been like, however I don't guarantee you the same experience. If you don't find what you are looking for you can always contact me by clicking on one of the inquiry form buttons throughout this site". Karen SUBSCRIBE TODAY ITS FREE WINTER Winter in Mauritius is the coldest and driest period of the year. Having said that, these months still feel like summer to me coming from UK! Winter starts in April and ends in October with May and November being known as the transition months. The average winter temperature is 20.4 degrees Celsius. I know, it's hardly a winter at all! The temperature difference between the two seasons is only 4.3 degrees Celsius. The coolest months are July and August where the lowest temperatures can reach 16.4 degrees Celsius. It seems the sun is not so strong during this period as I don't get sunburnt if I am out in the day. In the winder months the Central Plateau receives 6 hours of bright sunlight and the coastal areas receive 7 hours. in terms of rainfall, there isn't much. The mean rainfall in the winter is 666mm and October seems to be the driest month of the year. CHECK WEATHER SUMMER Mauritius has only 2 distinct season, summer and winter. Summer in Mauritius falls between the months of November and April with October and May being known as the transition months. The summer months are the hottest and driest months of the year . The average temperature during summer is 24.7 degrees Celsius. The hottest months of the year are January and February with the average temperature being 29.2 degrees Celsius. The sun definitely seems to be at it's strongest at this time so take extra precautions when going out in the sun. In the summer the island receives 6 hours of bright day light inland and up to 8 hours in the coastal regions. Although it is summer, it is also the wettest season. There is no labelled 'rainy season' but the wettest months are February and March. The average rainfall during the summer months is 1344mm. That is 67% of the annual amount over the Island. From my own experience I would add that mountainous areas seem to receive more frequent rain fall, so areas like Black River Gorges, Moka and Curepipe often have lingering clouds and quick on and off showers. You can wake up thinking there's no change of going to the beach with thick grey clouds and pouring rain then an hour later bright blue skies and sunshine ! CHECK WEATHER VIDEO CYCLONES Check out the cyclone page for all you need to know about cyclones (link below). But in short a cyclone is an intense tropical storm which forms over warm tropical oceans. It is characterised by low atmospheric pressure, strong winds and heavy rain. Mauritius is effected by cyclones almost every year, but these are not direct hits and usually the remnants of big storms. Cyclones occurring during the summer months when the ocean is at it's warmest. Although this might sound scary, Mauritius so so accustomed to having cyclones, it has become a way of life. Most building and properties have cyclone reinforcements and special shutters to protect you from the storms. Most homes also have generators to keep a flow of electricity coming to your home when the electricity cables inevitably fall down. When a cyclone hits it is categorised in classes to determine the severity of the precautions to be taken. A class 4 or 5 is the worst and means everything gets closed you must stay home and wait out the storm for your own safety. This was just a brief explanation, for more info click the button below to see our cyclone page. CYCLONES TORRENTIAL RAIN WARNINGS Torrential rain warning happen when 100mm of rain is recorded in a period of 12 hours. If this rain is persistent and continues the warning will be extended. Warnings are issued as this much heavy rain can cause flash flooding, flooding of residential and urban areas as well as rivers and streams overflowing. A secondary effect of torrential rain is landslides in mountainous areas or hill/slopes which causes a potentially high risk hazard. Once the meteorological services as has a reading of over 100mm of rain in a 12 hour period they will advise the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education and Human Resources. Then the police will issue warning via the radio and news channels.. When ever torrential rain conditions occur the all schools are closed ( Pre-primary, primary, secondary and tertiary schools). CHECK WEATHER CLIMATE CHANGE It saddens me to say, but like the rest of the world Mauritius is also being effected by climate change. With the average temperatures rising 0.15 Degrees Celsius per decade there is a clear increase when compared to readings taken since the 1960's. Reports form 2007 state that the sea water temperature is also increasing from the surface level and up to 700m depths. Sea level readings from the capital, Port Louis show an average rise in sea level of 1.5 mm per year. since 1950, although a longer measurement time is needed for more reliable results. The general warming of the atmosphere has impacted the hydrogen cycle and cause a decrease in the amount of rainfall. A decrease of 57mm per decade has been averaged since 1950s. Other impacts include a shift in seasons. With delayed rainfall lots of pressure is put on the water system to supply the increasing demand for agricultural, tourist, industrial and domestic purposes. There has been an increase in consecutive dry days and a decrease in consecutive wet days. Although the number of rainy days is decrease the number of extreme weather events leading to flash flooding and interruption of social economic activities as massively increased in the last 2 decades. Actions taken to combat climate change include bringing ideas of sustainable development to parliament from both public and private sectors and increased monitoring systems to measure the impacts of climate change. CYCLONES - A WAY OF LIFE What's the difference between cyclones, hurricanes, typhoons? They are all the same thing, they just have different names depending on where in the world you come from. Over the years I've lived here, the threat of cyclones and anti-cyclones (the difference explained below) during the cyclone season between mid-December through March, has become the 'norm'. In fact, as I write this section into the website, Mauritius has just had cyclone Emnati where the highest gusts recorded were 133km/h in Champ de Mars, north of the island. This took place over the weekend and reached a level of class 4 (out of 5) in severity and only three weeks since the previous cyclone Batsirai, another class 4 passing close to the north of the island. As discussed in the ' Climate ' section of our topics, the seasons in Mauritius are as follows. According to the Met Office, Mauritius temperatures rarely fall below 17 °C, or exceed 31 °C, however, Mauritius has some very humid months and above-average humidity throughout the year. The least humid month is September (68.8% relative humidity), and the most humid month is February (76.8%). Guests will be well taken care of and receive regular updates from the hotel staff regarding the meteo cyclone. For those lodging in an Airbnb or self-catering accommodations, it's common to find that many properties in Mauritius are equipped with storm shutters and generators to mitigate the effects of power outages. To further prepare for a cyclone in Mauritius, consider the following precautions: Ensure doors and windows are secured. Keep a portable, battery-powered lamp, candles, and matches within easy reach. Have a list of essential contact numbers handy, including local contacts and neighbors, and do not hesitate to reach out to them in emergencies. Stock up on enough fresh water, canned goods, bread, biscuits, cheese, and fresh milk. Having faced several cyclones, I've observed that the resilience of Mauritius and its people is remarkable. Cyclones are integrated into the island's way of life, with ample warning provided to secure properties and safeguard residents. The community's swift response in clearing debris and returning to normalcy post-cyclone is a testament to their preparedness and resilience. Subscribe DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CYCLONE AND ANTICYCLONE CYCLONE A cyclone is an area of low pressure where air masses meet and rise. It indicates bad weather, like rain and clouds. Winds in a cyclone blow counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. In a cyclone, air near the ground is pushed toward the low-pressure centre of the cyclone and then rises upward, expanding and cooling as it moves. As it cools, the rising air becomes more humid, leading to cloudiness and high humidity within the cyclone. Anticyclone An anticyclone is an area of high pressure where air moves apart and sinks. It indicates fair weather Winds in an anticyclone blow clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere Air at the centre of an anticyclone is forced away from its area of high pressure and replaced by a downward blast of air from higher altitudes. The air compresses and heats up as it moves downward, reducing its humidity and leading to fewer clouds within the anticyclone. Subscribe DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CYCLONE, HURRICANE, AND TYPHOON The terms "hurricane" and "typhoon" are regional names for tropical cyclones. All tropical cyclones are alike in that they draw heat from warm water at the ocean's surface to power horizontal, rotating wind. Although similar in size, tropical cyclones have a different energy source than synoptic cyclones, which are storm systems that draw their energy from weather fronts and jet streams. Over the Atlantic and East Pacific, tropical cyclones are commonly called "hurricanes." The common term is "typhoon" for a tropical cyclone that forms in the West Pacific. Tropical cyclones are called just "cyclones" in the Indian Ocean and near Australia. Subscribe CYCLONE SEASON IN MAURITIUS The cyclone season in Mauritius is a period marked by the potential for tropical storms, which on average, affect the region approximately five times annually. These cyclones, originating from the southern Indian Ocean, bring with them strong winds, significant rainfall, and towering waves. The timing of the cyclone season in Mauritius is closely linked to the summer monsoon, with the most intense storms typically forming in the months leading up to (May to June) and following (October to November) this period. These conditions are propelled by a mix of warm sea temperatures, elevated humidity, and conducive atmospheric circumstances. Regarding the specific timing of when cyclones hit Mauritius, the island is most vulnerable to these tropical storms during the summer months, spanning from November to April. The likelihood of cyclones increases during the peak phase of the season, from mid-December to March, coinciding with higher sea temperatures. The official cyclone season in Mauritius commences on the 15th of November and concludes on the 15th of May, highlighting the period when the island is most susceptible to the impacts of cyclones.
