It also has water hazards on almost every hole, making this golf course a very technical but fair challenge for the players. Power is not the priority on the Legend. You need to be accurate with your drives if you want to beat the course. The 12th & 13th holes are the “Amen Corner” of this course. Many players have lost tournaments on these holes. On hole 12, which is a par four, you have to be on the green in two to get away with a par, missing the green means trouble. The 13th hole is a short par five that is very narrow. Depending on your strategy, you could complete this hole with a birdie or a triple bogey. The par three 17th is the signature hole. Its shabby chic driftwood style makes it the perfect place to unwind whilst enjoying great food and exotic cocktails. As we entered the grounds of the hotel, just to the left-hand side I saw a sign “Rum Shed” which immediately pricked my interest. ​ The Rum Shed is part of the Shanti Hotel and is only open on a Saturday evening, so we booked at reception for dinner. As we walked down the gravel path we were greeted by the Shanti staff and a fully ablaze firepit in the middle of the Restaurants courtyard. Inside the “Shed” is a bar boasting over 200 Rums from around the world, a delight for the Rum connoisseur or for those that like Rum cocktails. The floor is of sand and the walls are multi-coloured planks of timber littered with objects and pictures with light-shades of full-sized steel drums hanging from the ceiling. The bar area is warm and friendly and expertly staffed. I recommend the Bar special smoking rum cocktail. CYCLONES - A WAY OF LIFE What's the difference between cyclones, hurricanes, typhoons? ​ They are all the same thing, they just have different names depending on where in the world you come from. ​ Over the years I've lived here, the threat of cyclones and anti-cyclones (the difference explained below) during the cyclone season between mid-December through March, has become the 'norm'. In fact, as I write this section into the website, Mauritius has just had cyclone Emnati where the highest gusts recorded were 133km/h in Champ de Mars, north of the island. This took place over the weekend and reached a level of class 4 (out of 5) in severity and only three weeks since the previous cyclone Batsirai, another class 4 passing close to the north of the island. ​ As discussed in the ' Climate ' section of our topics, the seasons in Mauritius are as follows. According to the Met Office, Mauritius temperatures rarely fall below 17 °C, or exceed 31 °C, however, Mauritius has some very humid months and above-average humidity throughout the year. But this year, I had a requirement to look for travel insurance and did the same I would would normally do. It makes extensive use of reinsurance facilities and is free from the pervasive premium, product, investment, and reinsurance controls that have bedeviled the insurance markets of so many developing countries around the world. Total premiums amounted in 2001 to 4.1 percent of GDP, while insurance company assets were equivalent to 18 percent of GDP. Insurance regulation and supervision is entrusted to the Financial Services Commission (FSC). The current regulatory framework has many strong elements, including reliance on solvency monitoring, prudent asset diversification, international accounting standards, and actuarial methods. But there are some important gaps in corporate governance, internal controls, and risk management. In addition, solvency ratios are below international standards and do not include modern risk-based capital requirements. These gaps are already being addressed in two new draft insurance bills which contain many highly modern provisions. Implementing regulations on solvency and actuarial standards need to be developed. Insurance supervision has been invigorated since the creation of the FSC, but further strengthening is required. It needs to emphasize risk management and internal controls, to develop an early warning system, and to establish clear procedures for early and effective intervention. The FSC should require actuaries to report on the reinvestment risk faced by insurance companies and their exposure to a large and persistent fall in interest rates. SEND HOTEL WESTIN HOTEL BALACLAVA The Intercontinental Hotel at Balaclava was the first hotel I ever stayed at in Mauritius and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We were fortunate to be upgraded and ended up with a large beachfront with an enormous terrace. ​ As the visit to Mauritius was for business we were only booked in for two nights but still managed to take in as much of its facilities and atmosphere as possible. My husband even managed to sneak out for a few hours fishing which the hotel chartered for him. ​ The beach is well kept and the staff are attentive which you would expect from a 5-star hotel. The surf vibe is immediately evident when you arrive at Enzo's which is above a surfer shop in La Gaulette shopping centre. This is very good quality comfort food that you can enjoy time and time again and the theme that runs through the ENSO/Wapalapam Bar Restaurants, rightly, has gained quite a following. My favourite dishes are the Lamb Bunny Chow which is a hollowed out small loaf of bread filled with an aromatic stew/curry/casserole. The crispy Salt & Pepper Calamari, Chilli Prawns and the Fish Curry. Mauritius is home to many beautiful creatures and the landscapes here offer diverse habitats for different wildlife species. I myself am an animal lover and love to see the wildlife thriving. ​ Below I will share some of the most beautiful wildlife I have experienced in Mauritius. I am not guaranteeing you the same response for yourself. Nevertheless, I cannot recommend what I haven't seen or experienced." Karen VIDEO SUBSCRIBE TODAY ITS FREE INTRODUCTION MACAQUE MONKEYS The Macaque Monkeys of Mauritius tend to stay up in the mountains and forested areas of the island, making them a rare spot. You probably won't notice them unless you're looking for them, in my experience. ​ They are very cute, but don't be fooled, they are wild animals so it is advised to keep your distance. ​ The closest encounter I have had with these cheeky curious creatures was in the East of the island at the Grande River South East Waterfall. They are very intelligent monkeys and over the years have noticed the boats coming up and down the river have lots of people with food on them. The day we were there, one monkey plucked up some courage and jumped onto the end of the boat! At which point the captain was not very pleased and quickly scared him off before he could steal anything. ​ This species is not endemic to Mauritius and it is believe they were bought here by early settlers as pets. So if you are around the national parks be sure to keep an eye out! VIDEO MACAQUE MONKEYS LIZARDS & GEKOS The big stunning green guy in the background is the Madagascar Giant Day Geko. These in my opinion are the biggest and brightest lizard you will find. I see them around the house often and have even stumbled across some set of small eggs. I like to seem them as they protect us from mosquitos and small insects by eating them. ​ There are many other types of geko and lizard. We see the Common Four-clawed Geko, Tropical House Geko, and Oriental Garden Geko frequently around the house and garden areas. The Four-clawed and House Geko look similar in appearance, they are a grey/brown colour and measure at about 10cm long. The garden geko is much bigger and has similarities to a an Iguana, its usually around 20cm and a yellowish colour. ​ The Reunion Day Geko, Ornate Day Geko and Bluetail Day Geko all have similar appearances they are small (5-10cm) and are mainly found outdoors in trees and bushed. They are mainly green with blue and red/orange patterns on them. They are very pretty and very shy. Try again later LIZARDS AND GEKOS DEERS Another non-indigenous mammal we have are the Rusa Deers. Much like the monkeys it is thought these were bought here by the Dutch people to introduce lifestock to the island. ​ The Rusa Deers are very large and when full grown can weigh up to 180ks. They are brown with the males carrying large set of horn which they lose and regrow once a year. ​ They can be found in the wild at Black River Gorge and in other park areas. The majority animals are kept in large privately owned hunting grounds. There are two hunting grounds on the island selling tourist packaging to hunting and shooting. This is not an activity I have or ever will try VIDEO DEER ALDABRA GIANT TORTOISE Mauritius is also home to these gentle giants. Originally from the 'Seychelles Island Aldabra. They are famous for living a long life and being able to survive with little food and water for long periods. ​ But in Mauritius they eat lots! Mainly grass, leaves, vines and weeds. They can be found at nature parks, zoo's and some hotels as a tourist attraction. I have seen them at Casela. ​ They are very friendly and gentle, just watch your fingers if you are feeding them! They also enjoy a good neck scratch. Try again later FLYING FOX The Mauritian Flying Fox, also known as the Greater Mascarene Flying Fox or Fruit Bat is an endemic species to Mauritius. These fluffy cute creatures are nocturnal and seen all over the island. At dusk in Tamarin it is a wonderful sight to see them flying down from the mountains to feed. ​ The diet consists of mainly fruit, they have a wingspan of 80cm and usually live around 20 year old! ​ If you a hear loud screeching in the trees at night, it is usually a bat fight breaking out. Don't worry it normally lasts no longer than 10 minutes before one bat is kicked out to find his own tree. ​ Unfortunately this species has become endangered since colonisation and there are big efforts to help save and protect the bats. VIDEO ENDANGERED CAUSE FLYING FOX PANTHER CHAMELEON The Panther Chameleon is an endemic species to Madagascar but has been introduced to Mauritius Island. They are stunningly coloured and change colour depending on their mood, temperature and lighting. ​ They can reach 50cm and are characterised by their fused claw/tong feet and round bulbous eyelids. Try again later WHEN AND WHERE The peak times for fishing in Mauritius are in the summer months, which are between November and April. Having said this Mauritius is a year round fishing destination and you will still catch fish between May and October, the time you decide to go may just influence what you catch. So if you have specific catches in mind you should look to book during the months these are more likely to be caught. ​ As for the time of day, you can go at any time and there are trips from the early hours till late. However the most successful times are at dawn or dusk. Trips are leaving as early as 4:00AM and as late as 17:00PM ​ The worst time to go fishing in Mauritius is after a full moon. The large game fish us the extra light to help them hunt and spend the whole night feeding therefore they do not take any bait in the coming days after. To be safe I would wait a few days to allow the fish to get their appetite back up. ​ As for the best spots for big game fishing on the island: North Coast South-West Coast West Coast ​ The great debate for the best fishing spot in Mauritius has still not been decided but from local friends I have heard many say the West and South-West are best! ​ However if you are looking for something slightly different to big game fishing, look no further than the East Coast. Here you can find Red Snapper, Giant Trevallies and Barracudas . ​ ​ WHEN ARE WHERE SUMMER CATCHES During the summer months of November to April you can expect to catch some of these large game fish: ​ Blue Marlin - a much sought after catch in Mauritius, these cobalt monsters can weigh up to 689kgs! Dog Tooth Tuna - Usually found near the reefs and weigh anywhere between 20-100kgs Sail Fish - Famous for reaching speeds of 60kph and being the fastest creature of the deep Spear Fish - known for it's aggressive behaviour, can be found most of the year and weighs up to 70kgs Bull Shark - Also an aggressive species but in Mauritius there has never been an attack so don't worry! Try again later WINTER CATCHES During the winter months of May to October you can expect to catch some of these large game fish: ​ Black Marlin - very close relative to the Blue Marlin same size and weight but with no blue stripes, Skip Jack Tuna - This is the famous canned tuna in abundance in Mauritius but they still put up a fight! Hammer Head Shark - Characterised but its unique head shape the record in Mauritus was 313kgs! Dorado/Mahi Mahi/Dolphin Fish - A beautifully coloured fish weighing up to 30kgs Yellowfin Tuna - A large, strong fish characterised by it's yellow fin! Weighs up to 180kgs! WINTER CATCHES OTHER INFO Other information to be noted: ​ No licence is needed if you have booked to go on a charted fishing boat. The boat with have a licence and this will cover you. No licence is needed to go fishing on the shores of Mauritius. My only advise is to wait for low tide and ideally to wear sea shoes as there are sea urchins! If you are keen to try shore fishing you will need to bring your own rods and walk out in low tide. ​ One final word of warning when deep sea fishing, be prepared for sea sickness. Everyone I know who has been of deep sea fishing trips here has always had one person in their group who suffered from sea sickness. CHANA PURI BEER WINE Chana puri is one of the most popular street foods that you can find around the island. They are little balls of fried batter with Chana dhal stuffed into them. They are usually served with rougaille. ​ This is a little deep fried dough ball, filled with lentils. If you want to (and I strongly recommend you do), the vendor will break it open and drizzle a chutney over it. I had the most amazing Chana Puri at the market in Mahebourg, doused with The Best Ever Coconut Chutney. Street stalls that sell Chana Puri also sell all sorts of other deep fried snacks, go wild and taste one of each! They are usually around Rs 5 each (EUR 10c), so no need to hold back. video care of Ivan Dragan video care of ZestyMu CHANA PURI ​ For the dough: 250g All-purpose flour 2 TSP Dry Yeast 1/4 TSP Sugar Salt to taste Around 250ml to 285 ml warm water For the stuffing: 175 g of Gram dal (soaked for 1 hour) 1 Onion (medium) 1/4 TSP Turmeric 1/4 TSP Garam Masala 1 TSP Cumin Powder 2 TBSP Coriander 2 TBSP Spring Onion 360 ml Water Salt to taste oil for frying Recipe: In a glass jug mix the sugar with the lukewarm water and dry yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes to activate the yeast. Place the flour into a glass bowl and combine thoroughly the salt. Now add the water and yeast and mix with a whisk to form a thick batter. Cover and allow to rest in a warm place away from direct sunlight for 6 hours. To make the chat dhal, add the chopped onion to 1 tbsp of medium hot oil in a pan. Sauté until brown. Now add the softened gram dhal, water, turmeric, and salt. Combine then cover and cook for 10 minutes on medium heat. Stir the lower the heat and let simmer for a further 20 minutes Once the water is reduced, add cumin powder and garam masala/ Mix and crush the Dahl with the back of a wooden spoon or use a potato masher. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Once cool, add the chopped spring onions and coriander. Mix in and roll into small balls Prepare a deep saucepan and heat over medium heat (enough for deep frying) One by one drop the Dahl balls into the batter then place them into the hot oil. Don’t overcrowd the pan so fry in batches.
