PLANATION OUTRIGGER REVIEW by Karen My Blog < Back The Plantation "don’t bother" Sunday, September 11, 2022 Author: Karen Thornalley my blog outrigger mauritius beach resort Tonight we tried the plantation restaurant at the Outrigger at Bel Ombre and as a lover of fine dining, we decided to use our all-inclusive meal allowance of 1500 MUR per person towards our bill for the evening. Upon arrival we were asked if we had booked, which we had and the waiter checked the list of diners in his hand and said we were not on it, he frowned, so we asked if he could fit us in and he said “no problem”. We followed him through the restaurant, to discover that we the only diners to have arrived so far that evening and as it turned out there would be only another two couples to join the whole evening! image: Plantation restaurant Outrigger Stale bread After a few minutes of sitting down, we were offered a bread roll each with butter. The roll was stale and like sawdust so not a good start! We then had the torcher of selecting a pre-dinner cocktail. I say "torcher" because to access the drinks menu we were pointed to a QR code sign sitting on the table. Great, what if you have decided to go out for a quiet meal and leave your phone in the room? My starter was a Dhal Puri with Foie Gras filling which I was expecting to be light and flavourful however the Puri seem either slate or deep fried which made it chewy and resulted in the foie gras being lost in the tasting senses although this dish flavours as a whole just didn’t work. mauritius beach resort image: Platanation restaurant Outrigger Hotel Sponge is King! For the main course, I can not fault it for flavour, which was two small strips of tenderloin steak with a beetroot chutney served with a tablespoon of mashed potato and gravy for 1600 MUR. To finish the review and continued disappointment we ordered desserts. The Chocolate tart was pretty much a disaster and had the worst chocolate ice cream I have ever tasted (if you want an ice cream experience go to one of the Wapalapam restaurants as they have a selection of homemade ice creams and they are an “oh my god” experience!) For some reason Mauritius pastry chefs use sponge bases for everything instead of pastry, maybe it's because they store longer! This dish looked great on arrival at the table but unfortunately, its appearance didn't live up to expectations in flavour and texture. My husband chose the Baklava which was titled “Turkey meet Mauritius”. For those who do not know what Baklava is, it is chopped nuts (usually pistachios) soaked in honey and wrapped in filo pastry. The flavours should be a combination of all three of these elements with a strong bias towards the sweet honey. Tonight's offering had an overpowering flavour of cinnamon which removed all the remaining elements from your taste buds.! hotel outrigger mauritius beach resort image: plantation restaurant To sum things up! I could go on and but I think you get the gist of the quality of food being served here! The bill came to 6900 MUR so with our room allowance at 3000, the bill for the two of us came to 3900 MUR. 6900 is the equivalent of; 152EUR , 2678RAND , 133GBP or 154USD and you have to take into account that this is without any drinks on the bill. I don't mind spending good money on good food but this didn't happen here. Was it worth not eating at the normal buffet, NO! Would we go again NO! Would we recommend, hell NO! Needless to say, this restaurant will not go anywhere near our top 10 restaurant listings. My advice is don't spend anything extra than you have to for this experience. Such a disappointment. Whether you are on route to the Le Morne beach for the day (featured in and Top 10 Beaches) or going for a hike up Le Morne Brabant (Top 10 hikes in Mauritius) or going to Kite Beach to watch or participate in Kitesurfing its worth will stopping by and trying it out. For us, we do as part of the first two types of outings but also just because we want good food with a great atmosphere. The Chef Willi has become a friend, and I can recommend this restaurant for its food, vibe, and staff. This majestic slave trail is located at the extreme Southwestern tip of the island where you will have the chance to feast your eyes on the most striking views of Mauritius. The rocky peninsula has a summit which covers an area of over 12 hectares (30 acres), and is about 556 meters above sea level. This majestic mountain has been declared as a World Heritage site by the UNESCO to commemorate the Maroonage (runaway slaves) legacy in Mauritius. Le Morne Brabant is one of the most preserved and wildest mountains of the island. It is a habitat to a very large variety of endemic and narrow-endemic species, such as the rare Trochetia Boutoniana, which is the floral emblem of Mauritius. Get into the heart of nature while you experience both the extreme opposites of lush greenery together with the rough and dry patches of the World Heritage Site. ​ The hike is not very physically demanding, although there are a few sections that are steep where using your hands is advisable. Famous for its beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, the beach is a great place to go swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing. Apart from this Blue Bay remains famous for the Blue Bay Marine Park which is a great place to explore underwater life through diving or cruising on a glass-bottom boat. ​ Blue Bay is rated as one of the most beautiful beaches of Mauritius both by the locals and visitors. Most people do not only come for the unique shades of blue in the waters, but also for its marine park which makes it one of the best snorkeling spots in Mauritius. The total area of the Marine Park is 353 hectares and is home to a natural “Coral Garden”, a shallow haven of different and marvelous types of mangroves, algae, seagrasses, corals, and other marine organisms. There is also a wide variety of fish species. It is one of the best places to admire marine life. Boats offering trips to the park can be found on the main beach. SEND Your content has been submitted An error occurred. Try again later RESTAURANT RUM SHED, SHANTI MAURICE I came across the Rum Shed on my first visit to the Shanti Maurice Hotel & Spa. As we entered the grounds of the hotel, just to the left-hand side I saw a sign “Rum Shed” which immediately pricked my interest. ​ The Rum Shed is part of the Shanti Hotel and is only open on a Saturday evening, so we booked at reception for dinner. As we walked down the gravel path we were greeted by the Shanti staff and a fully ablaze firepit in the middle of the Restaurants courtyard. Inside the “Shed” is a bar boasting over 200 Rums from around the world, a delight for the Rum connoisseur or for those that like Rum cocktails. The floor is of sand and the walls are multi-coloured planks of timber littered with objects and pictures with light-shades of full-sized steel drums hanging from the ceiling. The bar area is warm and friendly and expertly staffed. I recommend the Bar special smoking rum cocktail. Saying that I do remember is the stay being a pleasurable one and the standard of service and environment being of a good standard. What did stand out as a plus for me was the layout of the hotel itself in that its service areas were very well designed and interconnected which made navigating around the hotel both easy and pleasant. The LUX Le Morne Hotel has always been a favourite spot of mine for a number of reasons, including: location, beach, quality of service, amenities and more. Firstly, I tried La Cosa Nostra after I’d heard good reports about it from friends who had tried it or were familiar returning customers. I was still reticent to give it a go but one evening I thought “why the hell not”. Now, it has become a regular venue to eat and pizza is back in my life. La Cosa Nostra itself is located on the busy Royal Road in Tamarin just by the salt pan museum. No matter what time you arrive the place is busy with either diners or people collecting take-aways. The thin crust Pizza’s are made in a large wood fire oven built by the owner Eric Imbert. Tables are laid out in an undercover courtyard area with a sand floor. You can always relax with a drink at the La Cosa Nostra bar whilst waiting for a table to be ready whilst taking in the busy yet chilled vibe. I want as close to perfection as possible and I don't see anything wrong with that. I haven't stayed at this hotel to date and as soon as I do I will update the site. The current Mauritius Life ranking (ML) is so high as it depicts the lowest available score due to the fact it has not been ranked to date and is the same for all hotels that have not been visited by ML. I do go to stay at a hotel for enjoyment and not just to review and complain. I've visited many hotels over the years all over the world and eaten is some of the best restaurants in the world. I love fine dining and have many Michelin star restaurants I want to try that are scattered around the world on my bucket list. I know what 5-star is and what you should expect when staying at such highly rated accommodation. I want things to be the way they should be for me and others and here I am not looking for fault, I am looking for the good things and to report them to you so you can go and enjoy them in the hope that when you experience the same you will tell your friends and family how wonderful your stay was at that hotel and how fantastic Mauritius is.
