About Montagne Du Lion

Montagne Du Lion is a heritage site or historical landmark in the south-east of Mauritius, part of Mauritius' layered history stretching from Arab and Portuguese navigation through Dutch, French, and British colonial rule to independence in 1968.

Mauritius was uninhabited when Arab sailors first noted it in the 10th century. The Dutch were the first to establish a settlement in 1638; the French took control in 1715, naming it Île de France and developing the plantation economy; the British captured the island in 1810 and held it until independence. This 300-year colonial history has left a remarkable architectural and cultural legacy.

Montagne Du Lion (Lion Mountain) offers an adventurous hike with panoramic views of the South East coast. The challenging trail is well worth the effort for its rewarding vistas.

Mauritius has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Aapravasi Ghat in Port Louis (the immigration depot where indentured labourers arrived from India after the abolition of slavery) and Le Morne Brabant (a symbol of slave resistance). These reflect the island's complex social history.

French-period colonial mansions, British-era government buildings, Hindu temples built by indentured workers, Chinese pagodas, mosques, and Catholic churches all coexist within Mauritius' urban and rural fabric. The Eureka Colonial House in Moka is one of the most complete examples of French creole architecture on the island.

Heritage sites are generally open Tuesday to Sunday; some close on Monday. Guided tours are available at major sites and provide essential context. Photography is permitted at most sites.
