Public hospitals — free
Mauritius has free public healthcare for all residents. Emergency care, surgery, inpatient stays, and specialist referrals cost nothing at public hospitals.
Quality for emergency and surgical care at major public hospitals (Victoria, Jeetoo, Flacq) is generally good. However, non-emergency waiting times can be weeks or months, and facilities are below private sector standards.
Most expats use public hospitals for genuine emergencies where care is equivalent — and private for everything else.
Private hospitals — paid
Private hospitals and clinics offer same-day or next-day appointments, modern facilities, English-speaking staff, and care comparable to Western Europe — at significantly lower prices.
A private GP consultation costs MUR 1,000–2,000 (approx. €20–40). Most procedures are 30–60% cheaper than equivalent UK or French costs.
MEDICOVER is the largest local insurer. International policies (Cigna, Allianz, AXA, Bupa) are accepted at all major private hospitals.

The most widely used private health insurer, with the largest clinic and hospital network. Plans start from approximately MUR 2,500/month per person. Accepted at virtually all private facilities.
🌍 International policies
Cigna, Allianz Care, AXA Global Healthcare, and Bupa International all offer worldwide coverage plans accepted at Mauritius private hospitals. Check your plan covers Mauritius as country of residence.
🚁 Evacuation cover
For complex procedures not available on the island, medical evacuation to South Africa (4h flight) or Réunion Island is possible. International policies typically include evacuation cover; local plans usually do not.
