Beaches

Four Coasts.
Nineteen Beaches.

Mauritius is ringed by coral reef lagoons, volcanic rock and dramatic headlands. Each coast has its own character — from the calm, turquoise shallows of the north to the wild, windswept east and the cliff-edged south. No two beaches are the same.

North Coast

Grand Baie and the calm lagoon — the most popular stretch, with calm water, restaurants and watersports.

East Coast

Wild, windy and dramatic — surfer's paradise, with the famous Ile aux Cerfs just offshore.

South Coast

Dramatic cliffs, Black River Gorges and some of the island's most untouched stretches of sand.

What you need to know before you swim

Mauritius is generally safe for swimming, but sea conditions vary by coast and season. Be aware of stonefish on the reef (wear water shoes), sea urchins in shallower areas, jellyfish during certain months, and occasional sharks beyond the reef. Strong currents exist on the east and south coasts. Always check beach flags before entering the water.

Where to Eat & Drink

Mauritian cuisine is one of the most richly layered in the world — a fusion of Creole, Indian, Chinese and French traditions that reflects the island's extraordinary multicultural history. From beachside grills to fine dining, dholl puri at roadside stalls to rum bars at sunset.

Attractions

The island has more to offer than beaches

Inland Mauritius is a landscape of volcanic mountains, tropical forests, tea plantations and remarkable cultural heritage. The Chamarel Seven Coloured Earths, the Black River Gorges National Park, the colonial architecture of Port Louis — Mauritius rewards the curious traveller who ventures beyond the resort gates.
