Mauritius is one of the world's premier kite surfing destinations. The south-east trade winds blow consistently from May to November, creating perfect conditions at spots like Le Morne, Anse la Raie, and Pointe d'Esny. Warm water, wide lagoons protected by coral reef, and reliable wind make this an ideal destination for kitesurfers at every level.
Best season
May to November
The south-east trade winds blow most consistently from May through November, with peak strength in July and August. Winds typically run 20–30 knots, creating excellent conditions for intermediate and advanced riders. Outside of trade wind season, lighter winds and warmer water suit beginners learning the basics.

Le Morne Lagoon
All levelsThe most famous kite spot in Mauritius. Wide, flat lagoon with consistent south-east trade winds. Suitable for all levels.
Anse la Raie
Beginner–IntermediateNorth coast spot with steady winds and a broad lagoon. Popular with beginners for its shallow, calm water.
Pointe d'Esny
Intermediate–AdvancedSouth-east coast lagoon. Strong, consistent winds. Excellent for intermediate and advanced riders.
Bel Ombre

Lessons
Learn to kitesurf
Most schools offer IKO-certified instruction in English and French. A beginner course typically covers 9–12 hours of instruction over 3–4 days. You'll learn kite control on the beach before moving into the water. Progress to riding upwind in about a week.
Equipment
Hire and buy
Most schools offer daily and weekly equipment hire — kite, bar, board, harness, and wetsuit (not usually needed in warm Mauritian water). Some shops also sell new and used equipment. All major brands are represented.
Trade wind fact: Mauritius sits directly in the path of the south-east trade winds, which blow from the Indian Ocean year-round. During peak season (July–August) average wind speed at Le Morne reaches 22–28 knots — rated world-class by professional kitesurfers.
