Sugar Museum and Factory (L’Aventure du Sucre)

L'Aventure du Sucre — the Sugar Museum — is the most comprehensive history museum in Mauritius and one of the finest in the Indian Ocean region. Housed in the meticulously converted Beau Plan sugar factory near Pamplemousses, it uses the story of sugar cultivation to tell the full history of Mauritius from its discovery by Arab sailors in the 9th century through to independence in 1968 and beyond.

The factory building itself is extraordinary. Built in 1797 and operating continuously until 1999, it retains most of its original machinery — the crushing mills, the crystallisation tanks, the centrifuges, the enormous copper evaporating pans of the boiling house. Walking through the restored production floors gives a visceral sense of the scale and physical intensity of 19th-century sugar production, and of the labour — enslaved and indentured — that underpinned it.

The historical exhibitions are thoughtful and well-curated, covering the island's colonial history (Dutch, French, British), the slave trade, the indenture system, the social structure of the sugar estate, and the political story of decolonisation. The section on the indentured workers from India, Africa, China, and Madagascar is particularly strong, with personal accounts and documentary evidence that brings individual lives out of the statistics.

Entry includes access to the tasting room, where 20+ rums and rum-based products from Mauritius and the wider Indian Ocean region are available to try. The restaurant serves good Creole and international food on a terrace overlooking the former factory grounds. The gift shop has the best rum selection on the island if you're looking for something to take home. Allow 3 hours minimum — most visitors find they stay longer.
