How do you get permanent residency in Mauritius?

Direct Answer

Permanent residency (PRP) in Mauritius requires either 3 years of continuous residence under an Occupation Permit or Residence Permit, or a qualifying investment of at least USD 375,000.

Permanent Residence Permit (PRP)

Mauritius issues a Permanent Residence Permit (PRP) that is valid for 20 years and renewable. It gives you the right to live in Mauritius indefinitely and work without a separate Occupation Permit.

Who qualifies

**Route 1 — Via an Occupation Permit or Residence Permit:** After holding an OP or RP continuously for at least three years, you may apply for a PRP if you meet one of the following: earned at least MUR 150,000 per month in the last three years as a Professional; invested at least MUR 45 million in Mauritius as an Investor; or have an annual turnover of at least MUR 12 million as a Self-Employed person for each of the last three years.

**Route 2 — Via property purchase (PDS/IRS):** Purchasing a qualifying property above USD 375,000 grants a standard Residence Permit, not immediately a PRP. After holding the RP for ten years (reduced to five years for investors), a PRP application can be made.

**Route 3 — Retired Non-Citizen:** After three years of a valid Retired Non-Citizen permit with a minimum income transfer of USD 1,500/month, you may apply for a PRP if you have transferred at least USD 54,000 in total over the qualifying period.

What a PRP gives you

A Permanent Residence Permit holder can work for any employer in Mauritius without a separate work permit, start a business, and live without annual renewals. It does not give citizenship or a Mauritius passport.

Citizenship

Mauritius citizenship can be applied for after two years of Permanent Residency. Mauritius allows dual citizenship, so you do not need to surrender your original passport. Citizenship applications are processed by the Passport and Immigration Office and approved by the Prime Minister's Office.
