Grand River South East Waterfall: A Treasure of Mauritius
The Grand River South East Waterfall is Mauritius's highest waterfall, cascading over 90 metres into a dramatic forested gorge and most spectacular when visited by boat on a guided river safari.
The Highest Waterfall in Mauritius
The Grand River South East (GRSE) Waterfall holds the distinction of being the tallest waterfall in Mauritius, with a drop of approximately 90 metres. It is most dramatically experienced by boat — a river safari winding through steep forested gorges before the falls come into view.
How to Visit
River boat tours depart from the Grand River South East area near Mahébourg. Guided tours typically last two to three hours. The boat travels upriver through increasingly dramatic scenery before reaching the base of the falls.
The River Journey
The GRSE is flanked by native vegetation and birdlife. Kingfishers, herons, and endemic species can be spotted along the riverbanks. The gorge deepens as you travel upstream, with basalt cliffs rising on either side.
At the Falls
The waterfall descends in a single dramatic plunge into a dark pool. Swimming in the pool below is possible on some tours depending on conditions.
Best Time to Visit
The falls are most impressive from December to April. Always check with your tour operator about current conditions.
