It's also better positioned for visiting the north and north-east coasts.

The village has a genuine local character: the Super U supermarket, the small market, the roadside vendors, and the mix of local and expatriate families who come here on weekends give it an authenticity that Grand Baie's tourist infrastructure can dilute.

Sunsets at Flic en Flac face directly west over the ocean and are spectacular — arguably the best on the island for sunset watching. The dive sites off the west coast are exceptional; Flic en Flac is the best base for scuba diving in Mauritius, with the Cathedral, a large submerged rock formation, being a highlight.
