Poste Lafayette: A Hidden Gem of the Indian Ocean

Poste Lafayette: A Hidden Gem of the Indian Ocean

By Mauritius Life Editorial17 May 20262 min read

Poste Lafayette on the north-east coast of Mauritius is a tranquil fishing village with a beautiful windswept beach, strong kitesurfing conditions, and an authentic atmosphere that rewards travellers seeking something off the beaten path.

Discovering Poste Lafayette

The north-east coast of Mauritius is less visited than the glamorous Grand Baie or the resort-studded east coast. This relative obscurity works in favour of Poste Lafayette — a small fishing village where life moves at its own unhurried pace and the beach is rarely crowded.

The Setting

Poste Lafayette faces the open ocean to the north-east, which means the beach is often windswept and the water more energetic than on the sheltered west coast. The landscape feels wilder and more authentic than groomed resort beaches, and the constant breeze makes it one of the best kitesurfing locations on the north-east coast.

The beach is long and backed by casuarina trees, with fishing boats pulled up on the sand — a reminder this remains a working fishing community.

Getting There

Poste Lafayette is approximately 35 kilometres from Port Louis and can be reached via the northern coast road through Pamplemousses and then east along the coast. From the airport, allow around 45 minutes. Using a GPS is recommended.

Kitesurfing and Windsurfing

The consistent trade winds and relatively shallow, clean water make this a favoured spot for wind-powered sports. Equipment rental and introductory lessons are available. Conditions are generally better suited to intermediate and advanced riders.

Nearby Attractions

  • Cap Malheureux — famous red-roofed church
  • Pereybère beach — livelier, with excellent snorkelling
  • Rivière du Rempart market — local weekly market
