Scuba Diving in Mauritius
Discover Mauritius's remarkable underwater world: coral gardens, shipwrecks, eagle rays, and reef sharks. Courses and…
Sea kayaking in Mauritius offers access to parts of the lagoon and coastline that are impossible to reach on foot or by boat — the mangrove channels of the south-east coast, the hidden beaches between hotel properties on the east coast, and the coral gardens accessible only in shallow water at the reef's edge.
The most rewarding kayaking is on the south-east coast around Mahébourg and Pointe d'Esny, where the mangrove forests create a labyrinthine network of channels that shelter kingfishers, herons, and occasional Aldabra tortoises from the Île aux Aigrettes conservation project. Guided half-day tours depart from Mahébourg or Blue Bay and cover 8–12 kilometres of varied water, including mangrove paddling, open lagoon crossing, and snorkelling stops on the reef.
The east coast between Belle Mare and Trou d'Eau Douce is better for longer open-water paddling across the turquoise lagoon — the distance from shore to reef is 3–4 kilometres with clear, calm water throughout. Kayak hire by the hour is available from the watersport centres on most east coast beaches; the morning flat water before the trade winds build is the best time.
No previous kayaking experience is needed for the calm lagoon conditions. The double kayaks available at most operators are stable and straightforward to paddle. Guides on the organised tours carry first aid equipment and communication devices. Sunscreen, a hat, and a dry bag for your phone are the essential equipment. The best tours fill up early in peak season — book the evening before at minimum.
