Whale Watching in South Mauritius
Seasonal boat trips from the south coast to watch humpback and sperm whales in the deep water channel south of…
Tamarin Bay on the west coast is home to a resident pod of spinner dolphins that shelter in the bay each night and venture out into the open ocean in the morning. The dolphin watching excursions depart at dawn — usually 6:30–7am — and head out with the dolphins as they begin their daily journey westward.
The experience is genuinely wild. These are free-living dolphins in their natural habitat, not enclosed in a marine park. The boats follow at a respectful distance as the pod moves, and swimmers enter the water when the dolphins are calm and swimming slowly. A wetsuit or rash vest and fins are recommended — the water is warm but a 90-minute swim requires some insulation. The dolphins are acrobatic and curious; spinner dolphins will often approach snorkellers who are calm in the water.
The ethical debate around dolphin swimming in Mauritius is real. The resident pod is under pressure from the volume of tourism boats in the bay, and the dolphins' daytime rest cycles are disrupted by daily excursions. The most responsible operators follow voluntary codes limiting boat numbers, noise, and the duration of swimming sessions. Look for operators who limit group size, don't chase dolphins when they dive, and brief participants on how to swim passively without chasing the animals.
Tours typically run 3–4 hours and return to Tamarin beach by 11am. Breakfast is sometimes served on the boat after the dolphin session. Some operators combine dolphin watching with a stop at the underwater waterfall optical illusion site near the south-west coast for aerial or boat views.
