What is the best time to visit Mauritius?
Direct Answer
May to November is the best time to visit Mauritius, with the coolest and driest weather, lowest humidity, and calmest seas. May to August is the peak of ideal conditions.
Season overview
Mauritius has two main seasons: a warm, wet summer from November to April, and a cooler, drier winter from May to October. There is no "bad" time to visit Mauritius — the island is a year-round destination — but the winter months offer more predictable weather, lower humidity, and better conditions for outdoor activities.
May to August — peak season
This is universally considered the best time to visit. Daytime temperatures average 24–27°C. Humidity is low. Rain is infrequent and typically brief. Sea conditions on the lagoon are calm and clear. Kite-surfing conditions are excellent on the east coast. This is also the peak tourist season, so accommodation costs are higher and some popular restaurants require advance booking.
September to November — shoulder season
Still very good conditions. Temperatures begin to rise from September. October and November see the first signs of the coming summer — short afternoon showers become more common. The east coast trade winds ease, making conditions calmer for some water sports. A good compromise between weather quality and lower prices.
December to April — summer
Hot and humid, with temperatures reaching 32–35°C in January and February. This is cyclone season. Mauritius is rarely hit directly by a major cyclone, but the system affects weather patterns — expect more cloud, heavier rain, and strong winds at times. The west coast (Tamarin, Flic en Flac) tends to be drier and calmer than the east during this period.
Cyclone risk
The cyclone season runs from November to April, with peak risk in January and February. Mauritius issues a Class system for warnings (Class 1 through 4). Classes 3 and 4 mean strong structural winds. Direct hits are infrequent — on average, a tropical storm affects the island in some way every two to three years. Flights are occasionally disrupted during storm alerts.
