Overview
The Black River district encompasses the dramatic south-western corner of Mauritius, where mountains meet the sea and the island's wildest landscapes are found. The district stretches from Tamarin in the north to Le Morne peninsula in the south, taking in the Black River gorges, the Chamarel plateau, and the coast.
For expats and international buyers, Black River represents the quieter, more private end of the west coast. PDS developments in the district include some of the island's most exclusive estates, set against mountain backdrops with ocean views. The nearby gorges national park provides world-class walking and birdwatching. The game fishing off Black River is among the best in the Indian Ocean.
The area is less developed commercially than Grand Baie or even Tamarin, which is exactly its appeal. Residents tend to value space, nature, and privacy over urban convenience. The trade-off is longer drives to the best supermarkets, schools, and hospitals — though improved road infrastructure has reduced travel times significantly.
Key statistics
Lifestyle
Life in Black River is dictated by nature. Morning hikes into the gorges, fishing expeditions, and weekend visits to the Chamarel seven-coloured earth and waterfall are the rhythm of the area. The Saturday market is a community anchor. The pace is genuinely slower than the north or centre of the island. Evening entertainment is primarily social — dinner at friends' homes or the few good local restaurants.
History
Black River has long been associated with fishing and the sea. The Rivière Noire estuary was an important anchorage. The gorges were designated a national park in 1994, protecting one of the last significant areas of native Mauritian forest. Development pressure has been largely contained by the national park and the terrain, making it one of the least-changed coastal areas on the island.

Frequently asked questions
Is Black River good for game fishing?
Yes — Black River is the best base for big game fishing in Mauritius. The deep-water drop-off just offshore produces marlin (blue and black), yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and dorado. The main season for blue marlin is November to April. Several charter boats operate from the Black River marina.
What is the Black River Gorges National Park?
Black River Gorges is a 6,574-hectare national park covering the south-western interior of Mauritius. It protects the island's most significant area of native forest and is home to the Mauritius kestrel, pink pigeon, and echo parakeet — species rescued from extinction. Several well-marked hiking trails cross the park, from short walks to a full-day traverse to the Grand Bassin sacred lake.
How far is Black River from Port Louis?
Approximately 35 minutes via the M1 motorway under normal traffic conditions. The motorway connection has significantly improved access from what was historically a 50–60 minute journey.
Is Black River suitable for families?
Black River suits families who prioritise space, nature, and privacy over urban convenience. There are no international schools in the district — a 35-minute drive to Grand Baie for Northfields is the norm. The area is very safe and offers exceptional outdoor activities, but is less practical for families needing close access to international school infrastructure.
