Overview

Flic en Flac (the name is believed to derive from the Dutch "Fried Landt Flat" meaning flat, clear land) sits on a wide bay backed by a long public beach and a growing residential area. It has a more relaxed, local feel than Grand Baie while still offering solid international services and a well-established expat community.

The beach is the defining feature — wide, clean, and well-maintained. The bay faces west, giving spectacular sunsets and calm swimming conditions. The offshore reef creates excellent snorkelling and diving conditions, and several dive schools operate from the beach. The Cathedral dive site, one of the most celebrated in the Indian Ocean, is accessible from Flic en Flac.

Property here is more affordable than the north, and the South African community in particular has found Flic en Flac an attractive combination of climate, price, and quality of life. It is close enough to Port Louis for commuting and has its own growing service infrastructure.
