Overview
Le Morne Brabant is the iconic peninsula mountain that appears on Mauritian banknotes. The final section requires a guide — the last 200m involves rope climbing on exposed rock. The summit rewards with an unmatched 360° view across the turquoise lagoon, Ile aux Bénitiers, and the Morne Peninsula below. The site has deep historical significance: it was the last refuge of escaped enslaved Africans who jumped from the summit in 1835, not knowing abolition had already been declared.
Difficulty: Hard
Requires good fitness and some scrambling. Boots recommended. Allow a full half-day.
Trail Route
Park at Le Morne village car park (free). Take the main trail heading northeast up through the forest.
The first 2km are a steady climb through mixed woodland. Follow the marked path — there are several false trails.
After the forest section, the terrain becomes more exposed. You will reach a saddle with views of both coasts.
The final 200m to the true summit requires a fixed rope and scrambling on exposed basalt. A local guide is MANDATORY for this section.
Descent by the same route. Allow 45 min from saddle to summit and back.
