Overview
Le Pouce (811m) is the third-highest peak in Mauritius and one of the most popular hikes on the island. The distinctive thumb-shaped summit is visible from much of central Mauritius. The trail starts from Helvetia village and passes through eucalyptus and endemic forest before reaching open ridge walking with views across Port Louis harbour, the central plateau, and on clear days, Réunion. No guide required but a hiking companion is recommended.
Difficulty: Moderate
Requires reasonable fitness. Some steep sections. Trail shoes recommended.
Trail Route
Start at Helvetia village — park along the roadside. Look for the trail marker at the village boundary.
Initial section is through eucalyptus plantation — wide track, easy to follow. 45 min to the forest edge.
Trail steepens after the forest. Open scrubland with views emerging. Follow yellow markers on rocks.
Ridge section: dramatic views left to Port Louis, right to the central plateau. Continue toward the thumb formation.
Final scramble to the summit — some easy handhold scrambling required. Not exposed.
Return the same way. The descent is faster but steep on the knees.
