Overview
Corps de Garde (720m) is the prominent mountain visible from Quatre Bornes and the west coast motorway. The trail from Saint Jean is well-worn and relatively straightforward — making it a good introduction to Mauritius mountain hiking. Views from the summit extend across the west coast plain to the lagoon at Flic en Flac and Tamarin Bay, with the Rempart and Trois Mamelles visible to the north. The final section involves basic scrambling but nothing technical.
Difficulty: Moderate
Requires reasonable fitness. Some steep sections. Trail shoes recommended.
Trail Route
Park at Saint Jean village. The trail begins at the edge of the village — follow the worn path uphill.
First section through light scrub and sugar cane margins — 20 minutes.
Forest section begins. Trail is clear and well-used. Steady climb for 45 minutes.
Open rocky section with panoramic views emerging. Trois Mamelles visible to the north.
Final push to summit involves short scramble. Take care with footing on loose rock.
Descent same way. Faster but harder on knees — take your time.
